Now that the 113th Congress has adjourned, be an informed citizen and find out how your Members of Congress voted on key pro-life measures. From the link below, enter your zip code, then click on your Senator or Representative's name, then on their "Votes" tab.
The Constitution of the Dominican Republic states that, "The right to life is inviolable from conception until death." Yet on December 16 the lower house of the Dominican Congress voted to decriminalize abortion for cases of the mother's health, which is always interpreted too broadly, and for fetal malformations. Please join pro-lifers from all over the world in signing this letter to President Danilo Medina, urging him to respect the nation's Constitution and defend the rights of the unborn.
This could take many forms. It could mean participating in the actions featured on this site every day, or engaging more deeply in one particular issue or cause. It could mean getting to know your neighbors better, resolving to share the gospel with one particular person, or using a talent to produce God-honoring art of some form. There are many possibilities, but please take a few minutes as the new year approaches to prayerfully consider how God might use you as salt and light in a new way in 2015.
Thanks for following Engage Daily!
Many issues of Christian concern are decided at the state level. That's why each Saturday at Engage Daily I make it easy for you to act on a particular issue in your state.
This Saturday's state-level issue is abortion. About once a month we will check in with our state chapter of National Right to Life, to make sure we are doing all we can to protect unborn children in our state.
From Morality in Media, Porn Harms and Stop Trafficking Demand:
"The booming demand for trafficked women and children in recent years is due in part to the proliferation of pornography. Government officials, leaders, celebrities and the general public are calling for increased efforts to stop sex trafficking. However, it must be recognized that unless something is done to curb the demand, we will never solve the problem of this exploitation."
Complete your contact information from the link below and an email will be automatically generated and sent to President Obama, your U.S. Senators and Representative, and your state legislators, letting them know of the link between the pornography industry and human trafficking, and urging them to act.
Engage Daily is taking a break for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Enjoy celebrating the Word become flesh, and may he dwell among you!
Please tell your church, Christian friends, and online social networks about Engage Daily. Our cumulative impact each day will be that much greater!
From the Family Research Council.
"The fact that a chaplain was reprimanded for discussing his faith in a suicide prevention course is almost beyond belief. It casts a chilling effect upon other chaplains and military personnel who would speak about their faith. How else would a Christian chaplain be expected to respond to a crisis that is plaguing our men and women in uniform?"
First, the protest, from www.onemillionmoms.com. The latest episode of CBS's show 2 Broke Girls, aired at 8:00 p.m., included, "child neglect, drug abuse, sexual encounters, nasty dialogue, graphic sexual descriptions, sexual innuendos, extremely foul language and mockery of Jesus and Christmas."
In contrast, spend an additional five minutes admiring the furniture of Christian carpenter Harrison Higgins, which mirrors the beauty and durability of the created trees from which it is made.
In 20 years you're as likely to know a Muslim as to know an Episcopalian today. To reach Muslims with the gospel...
This Sunday's World Missions Here at Home featured organization is COMMA, A Coalition of Ministries to Muslims in North America. As they say on their website, "The number of U.S. Muslims will more than double, so you are as likely to know a Muslim here in 20 years as you are to know someone Jewish or Episcopalian today."
Each Saturday Engage Daily features an action at the state level, since so many important issues are decided by state governments. Today we offer Capitol Commission's www.pray1Tim2.org project, which equips Christians to knowledgeably obey the biblical mandate to "pray for all those in authority."
"Capitol Commission, in partnership with the church, is committed to making disciples of Jesus Christ and promoting the Biblical mandate to pray for those in authority in the Capitol communities throughout the United States and around the world."
From the link below, click on your state, then on the left click on "State Leaders" and "How to Pray." You can also sign up for weekly, or even daily, emails featuring lawmakers to pray for from your state.
Let's not forget our brothers and sisters in Iraq. Petition Pres. Obama to stop genocide of Christians.
From the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ):
"Iraq's Christians are being slaughtered by brutal jihadists. Stand with Iraq's Christians. Tell America and the world that we must prevent genocide in Iraq."
Urge your Representative to join lawmakers worldwide in signing the Declaration on the Rights of the Family:
The Declaration on the Rights of the Family is a document signed by elected representatives from around the world. It begins
"We, democratically elected Members of Parliament worldwide, solemnly reaffirm what has long been acknowledged in international law, namely that the family, based on marriage between one man and one woman, is the natural and fundamental unit of society entitled to protection by society and the State."
By following the simple steps below you can encourage your member of Congress to add his or her name to this important document.
Urge the US to intervene on behalf of Pakistani Christian convicted of blasphemy for defending her faith.
"After five postponements, the Court of Appeals in Lahore, Pakistan convicted Asia Bibi for her Christian faith. Asia Bibi is being charged with blasphemy and apostasy for holding fast to her Christian faith in the predominantly Muslim country. The mere existence of the blasphemy law in Pakistan is a serious violation of the fundamental right to religious freedom. Asia Bibi did not receive a fair or just trial and sentence. She has not even had a chance to defend her innocence against false accusations.
The family of Asia Bibi has said they will appeal to the Pakistani Supreme Court.
The government of Pakistan would never do anything that would disturb the United States. By signing this petition, you will send an email to the American Ambassador to Pakistan, Richard Olson."
First, the protest. We need to continue to let new sponsors of ABC's program "How to Get Away With Murder" know that they should pull their ads from this show. Earlier this month it was Kay Jewelers; this time its Kohl's. As One Million Moms writes, "This program has included assault and murder on several occasions, as well as graphic heterosexual and homosexual sex scenes, foul language, mockery of Jesus Christ and Christians, sex with a minor, adultery and marital affairs." While unedifying for adults, it is especially inappropriate for children, despite airing at a relatively early hour.
In contrast, Makoto Fujimura is a world-renowned artist, arts advocate, and writer whose Christian faith informs his work and inspires other Christian artists. He founded The International Arts Movement in 1991. In 2014 the The American Academy of Religion awarded him its "Religion and the Arts" award, and he released a new book, Culture Care.
Today's action is from Walk Free.
ISIS has persecuted religious minorities and condemned thousands of women to sexual slavery. Call on Members of the UN Security Council to refer ISIS to the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court.
This Sunday's World Missions Here at Home idea is from the Joshua Project and www.missionalwomen.com.
This Saturday's state-level action is to combat sex trafficking by urging your state lawmakers to prioritize the legislation needed in your state.
Shared Hope International is the leading Christian organization combating sex trafficking in the United States. Each year they issue a "Report Card" grading each of the 50 states in terms of how well their laws combat this vile business. Their 2014 Report Cards were recently completed. From the link below, you can choose your state, and a letter appropriate to the grade your state received on its Report Card will be automatically generated for you to send to the right lawmakers.
From International Christian Concern (ICC):
"ICC has received eye-witness testimonies from local ministries revealing that dozens of Protestant and Catholic Christians have been abducted and violently tortured because of their religious identity. These Christians weren’t murdered in Nigeria, Iraq, or Pakistan. They were killed in Europe, shot dead by armed separatists in Eastern Ukraine."
The UN says kids want sexual rights. Tell it otherwise: sign The Declaration on the Rights of Children and Families.
From the UN Family Rights Caucus:
"For years the UN has been calling on governments to “hear the children,” meaning to let them have a say in government." Yet UN bureaucrats constantly hand pick children to attend UN meetings who have been carefully groomed to promote radical sexual rights and other things harmful to children."
In contrast, The Declaration on the Rights of Children and Families better states what children really want and need. It declares that each child has the right to the following:
From the European Center for Law and Justice (ECLJ) and CitizenGO:
"Every year, children are born alive at the time of the abortion procedure after the 20th week of pregnancy in Europe. They are, most often, abandoned to die without care, struggling to breathe, sometimes for several hours, or they are killed by the lethal injection or suffocation. Some governments, by fear of questioning late abortions, refused recognising publicly that these newborns have rights."
The ECLJ invites anyone, including non-Europeans, to petition the Council of Europe to "investigate the practice of neonatal infanticide and to clearly condemn it."
Today is the National Day of Prayer to Strengthen the Fight Against Pornography, sponsored by Morality in Media's Porn Harms project.
"The Abstinence Education Reallocation Act establishes a community-based Sexual Risk Avoidance (SRA) abstinence education program. This bill will begin to correct the 16:1 funding disparity between contraceptive-centered vs. abstinence-centered sex education within current sex education policy. The bill will not increase the federal budget, but will fund the program through monies already allocated in the Health and Human Services Secretary's Prevention and Public Health Fund."
The recent controversies surrounding police incidents in Ferguson and Staten Island have revealed a racial divide not only in our country, but in the evangelical church as well.
So this Sunday we introduce a new issue to Engage Daily - Racial Reconciliation - by highlighting Global Mosaix Network, whose vision is as follows:
"Healthy multi-ethnic and economically diverse churches must be established on sound theology for the sake of the Gospel. It's about reconciling men and women to God through faith in Christ and congregations to the principles and practices of New Testament inclusive churches.
Much is decided at the state level. So find the pressing issues for Christians in your state, and act, here.
This Saturday's state-level action is to check in with our state branch of the Family Research Council.
From your state organization's home page, find the tab for "Action" or "Legislation," or words to that effect, then follow the prompts to take an action is being encouraged in your state.
Please tell your church, Christian friends and online social networks about Engage Daily. Our impact will be that much greater every day!
