This important legislation will help released prisoners avoid returning to a life of crime and help them reintegrate as productive members of society.
This week Justice Fellowship (a ministry of Prison Fellowship) is urging us to call our Senators and/or Congressman urging them to support this legislation. In the Senate, the bill is S.1690, and in the House of Representatives it is H.R. 3465.
Call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard toll-free at 1-866-720-3733. If you don't know who your Senators or Representative are, give them your zip code, and they will connect you.
Here is a script you can use, courtesy of Justice Fellowship:
"Hi, my name is _________ and I’m a constituent. May I speak to the staff person who handles Judiciary or criminal justice issues? [[The receptionist may transfer you or give you the staff person’s voicemail or he/she may say they can take your message. You can use the following talking points, but feel free to include why Second Chance matters to your personally.]]
As a constituent, I am calling to ask the Senator/Representative to cosponsor the Second Chance Reauthorization Act. That’s bill number S. 1690/H.R. 3465.
I believe that after people who commit crimes have served their sentences, they must be allowed to reintegrate back into the community.
Thanks to the reentry programs made possible through Second Chance, prisoners are being transformed and states are reducing recidivism and improving public safety.
I am counting on the Senator/Representative to support the reauthorization by cosponsoring so these critical resources continue to transform people and help make communities safer.
Thank you for sharing my message with the Senator/Representative."
